Why The Role Matters:
The Work - The Big Anxiety Research Centre develops Virtual Reality/XR, immersive media and AI applications through the felt Experience & Empathy Lab [fEEL]. This research lab supports an exciting new transdisciplinary approach to the study of lived experiences of ageing, trauma and mental health – specialising in the development of virtual reality, immersive media and AI skilled companions. The team spans psychosocial studies/social science, art/design, immersive media and 3D visualisation.
The Technical Officer (Unity 3D) will have a strong background in virtual reality development to contribute to the creation of groundbreaking AR/VR/MR applications and experiences, using their solid understanding of Unity and C# programming, along with the ability to thrive in a collaborative and creative environment. This position reports to Scientia Professor Jill Bennett and research fellow Volker Kuchelmeister.

Accountabilities:

Level 5 -
- Collaboratively develop immersive virtual reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), Mixed Reality (MR) and screen-based content and experiences as directed by the team.
- Implement and optimise interactive and visually stunning user interfaces and experiences.
- Work closely with artists, designers, and other developers to integrate assets and features.
- Debug, optimise, and maintain existing codebase for optimal performance.
- Stay up to date with the latest VR and Unity/C# development trends and technologies.
- Help out with the technical setup and running of public engagement events.
Level 6 (in addition to above)
- Solve technical problems as they occur and develop innovative solutions.
- Set priorities, monitor workflows within the team and liaise with collaborators and colleagues.
- Provide authoritative advice to streamline workflows and implementation.
Skills and Experience:
To be considered you will hold Australian Working Rights or Australian Citizenship. Visa sponsorship is not available for this appointment.

Level 5 -
- Relevant tertiary qualification or equivalent level of knowledge gained through other combination of education, training and experience.
- Basic experience with 3D modelling and animation software.
- Knowledge of VR hardware and platforms (Meta Quest).
- Experience interfacing Unity with external services such as LLMs and NLP (cloud based or local) across multiple platforms
- Experience building and deploying to desktop, iOS, Meta Quest VR and WebGL
- Experience with iOS app-store and Meta Horizon store publishing an advantage
- Time management, organisational and problem-solving skills, including the ability to meet deadlines.
- Well-developed interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills appropriate for interacting effectively with team members, collaborators, and colleagues.
- Ability to make sound judgements and work both independently and as part of a team.
- Demonstrated experience supporting and contributing to projects and initiatives.
Level 6 (in addition to above)
- Relevant tertiary qualification with subsequent relevant experience or equivalent competence gained through any combination of education, training and experience.
- Strong organisational skills with proven ability to deal with multiple tasks and establish priorities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a high level of attention to detail for deliverables produced.
- Excellent time management skills, with a demonstrated ability to respond to changing priorities, manage multiple tasks and meet competing deadlines by using judgement and initiative.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and productively within a team, but also to take initiative and work independently while managing competing demands.
